Default Exploding Tattoos !!

Just been watching a program called 'mythbusters'.
They were asked to see if there was any truth behind the myth that tattoos explode when the wearer is put through an MRI Scanner.
Apparently the magnetic field in the scaner could be so strong that some tattoos (which can contain elements of metal oxides) would explode.
They put a lady with a tattoo on her upper arm through this scanner to see if anything showed on the scanner screen to indicate any reaction.Nothing appeared wrong on the scan nor did the lady feel anything.
They then set out to see if any of the metal oxides contained within some inks reacted to magnetisim in their raw state. only one showed signs of reaction - Iron oxide

They then tattooed two pieces of pork, one with normal tattoo ink, the other with the same ink, only heavily dosed up with iron oxide.
Both pieces of pork were then passed into this machine and scanned. Both showed signs of distortion on the scanner screen but the heavily dosed iron oxide sample showed far greater disturbance than the conventional ink. When both were removed from the scaner, neither show any surface distortion nor any ink leakage.

This test did seem to point towards the rumour of exploding tattoos when placed in an MRI Scanner as being a myth. However, the operators of this machine did say that of the many hundreds of tattooed persons going through this proceedure,a very few had complained of discomfort, extra heat on their tattooed area and the occasional redness appearing after exiting this machine. Only once have they had a person come out with a blister apon their tattoo.
It was also said that these stories of exploding tattoos tended to be linked to inks used more than twenty years ago.

I once convinced an ex girlfriend you couldn't go on a plane with a fresh tattoo, because the pressure change could cause the ink to explode..... der....

Hey Twoskips, that's probably from the days when they used mercury in the ink...maybe?

That program makes me miss my mate Dan who recently moved to Canada. We were forever blowing things up and setting fire to things we shouldn't. None of my other mates are daft enough. Whenever my wife left the house leaving us both together she always used to warn us that 'just because you can, it doesn't mean you should'. I haven't accidentally destroyed anything in ages.
