Apparently getting a tattoo hand-poked is like being punched repeatedly for 3 hours at a time - the needles cause less trauma but the bruising is brutal!

And unhygienic! Blankets FFS? There is no excuse - tradition or not, gloves should be worn and surfaces should be covered in disposable plastic etc.

No exceptions.

That's what I thought. If I was only having the one piece it would take me a lot longer than a day to decide who I'd want to do it.

No way! Artists should stick to what they're best at, and for Bez it's realism. His Jap work is smoothly applied and all, but it's just not 'right' if you know what I mean. Like most specialist Jap artists wouldn't do a good job on a portrait, I'd say the same applies vice versa. Specially for really traditional stuff like Horiyoshi puts out.

I disagree. If you don't move forward, you stagnate and how will you ever discover what you're best at unless you experiment, anyway?

The decision is ultimately that of the client - if they like the way that Bez (or whoever) does Japanese-inspired work, they should go for it.

I agree in this instance though that if he wants the traditional style, there are limited choices.

But Bez should tattoo whatever he wants!

Yeah I understand all that, but I wouldn't want to be the poor sucker wearing well excecuted but shite work whilst the artist is experimenting.

See, people say traditional work is basic and simple, and I'm sure there's a whole lot more to learn with realism etc, but if you don't understand the style and can't draw up a convincing design, leave it well alone til you can draw it right. And I've seen plenty of artists who excel at other stuff make a totally whack job of traditional tattoos just because they've blatantly been done by someone who doesn't normally do that kind of thing.

Same with Japanese, same with biomech, same with everything. I wouldn't go to a biomech artist and ask for a totally sweet traditional rose because likelyhood is he'll not really grasp the style properly and it'll end up looking like cherry creek flash. So why go to a realism tattooer and ask for traditional Jap work?

Back on topic, the point of this thread was to help the OP find an artist in the same vein as Horiyoshi III without sending him all the way to Japan to meet an old man who probably wouldn't tattoo him anyway. So.... I think we've veered off track a little
