One of the seven sessions on my back was horrible from start to finish. The others were all mostly smooth sailing.

My most recent (on my calf) was no sweat at all for 2 hours. The last 30 mins were tough, though.

Depends on so many factors, including where you are mentally, I'm sure. Stressed etc.

.
I've had one of those times, tis the only time I shook afterwards & had to sit quietly and have a cuppa before going home. Upper back was ok but I'm struggling now with the lower back. ........ Which is silly when you think how many hours tattooing I've had.

Yet having my robin & mistletoe on my arm a few weeks ago was a breeze, I had a great time?

As Cherryghost, you and a few others have said, tis variable on a lot of factors. ... In fact I think CG was spot on!
But good for Bon for trying to pull it together.

I fucking HATE injections. Almost always make me pass out. Got a blood test the day, next thing I know I'm coming to with an oxygen mask on. But fortunately this doesn't happen when I get tattooed.

I'm the same. I have real issues with blood tests, and anything intravenous.

Ive played paintball a fair bit. The pain is nothing compared to having your ribs drilled for a few hours.
