Default Japanese Woodblock style recos?

Hey guys!

Been lurking on here a while finally time to get some work done.

I'm into the Japanese ukiyoe style woodblock art to do some type of bird and flowers for a BnG half sleeve, does anyone have any recommendations for artists?

I love the way Gakkin does his animals, but not crazy about heavy blackwork/windbars. Also Yuuz tattooer is great but heard bad experiences about him.

I'm near Tristen and Tony at Chronic Ink, but I think they might be too neo traditional to take up something like this. Thoughts?

You and I have very similar tastes! Most of the top quality Japanese style artists in Canada tend to be more in the neo style you mentioned with Tristen Zhang and Tony Hu (others of mention are Anthony and James Tex, Damian Robertson). I have toyed with the idea of having my second sleeve be done by Tristen in the hopes he could tap into the more Ukiyo-e style art, I am however not convinced it would be in line with what I want. It would 100% be an amazing piece in his own style though and is very very tempting due to the closeness of his studio!

Have you looked in Simon Dadahell in Montreal? He might delve into that style for you:

Mike Dorsey in Cincinnati?

Matt Lambdin in Philadelphia?:

What all have you heard about Yuuz? I'm not sure he would even really be able to do it in the style you are looking for, but just curious.

Someone to consider would be Horitomo at State of Grace. Dude does a ton of ukiyo-e paintings if I remember correctly.

Thanks! Not quite what I’m looking for still, but closer. I’m tempted to just see what tristen says and maybe just roll the dice haha. I’ve seen him do a piece here and there outside of his style but with mixed results. Maybe I’m playing with fire. My other sleeve option was statue stufff from Lil B ...before I found out what his rate was now

Spoke to previous clients and language barrier was huge. He also apparently kept rescheduling one guy who specifically travelled from the States without explanation and tried to aggressively pressure him into another design that wasn’t what he wanted (according to him)

Here’s a ukiyoe tiger he did https://instagram.com/p/BcZv5HVnZaF/

Black and grey irezumi seems hard to come by without being the blackwork style

They thanks man, Shane and Ian are closer to what I'm looking for....almost there!

I did find this sweet Nicklas Westin hawk ...I think it's by him at least. It's pretty much what I'm looking for in terms of style. Just trying to see what other options I have than going to Barcelona.

Is it a bad a idea to book a consult with Tristen? I generally haven't seen him do this style so it might be a gamble, but I love his flow and he's local to me...

i wouldn’t say it’s a bad idea but personally i wouldn’t bother, particularly when i know exactly what i want. if i want something similar to what gakkin is doing, i’m sure as shit not going to tristan no matter how amazing he is, it’s just not his style.

Can't say that Westin falcon in any way resembles Ukiyo-e style woodblocks. The falcon is borderline realism in that tattoo with none of the stylized Japanese influence you posted in your original examples.

I would have thought this hawk by Mike Dorsey is a better representation, no?:
