Default Not sure how i go about finding my "ideal" tattoo artist

NEW YORK AREA

I have a design in mind and went through multiple portfolios in the new york area some examples being, hand of glory, tattoo wonderland, studio 28, etc. I liked some but nothing like what i am looking for. I want a nice coloured pheonix tattoo but all the designs i see use designs that are not even close to what i am looking for. How do i find an artist that will have this design thats in the New York area?

I will post some pictures of the type of Phoenix i want as well as its colors.

Love the way this looks, want an artist to make something in this style.

Love the colors used in this

No artist so far in portfolios have used any of these concepts. I am so confused. I really want this design thanks.

I mean I haven't even heard of any of those shops.

Honestly for here in NYC it all depends on what your budget is.

As far as that stippled style goes, it's going to be hard to find someone in NYC that does that esp with color.

That second Phoenix is more an illustrative realistic approach.

My immediate reaction is to recommend Yomico at Last Rites:

Also maybe checkout Ruben at Grit N' Glory as well (very nice guy):

But really you need to expand your search beyond NYC esp for the pricepoint you are going to be paying here compared to other places.

Check out the Empire State Tatto Convention:
Tattoo Convention | Manhattan | NY Empire State Tattoo Expo

And honestly if you can get in with him, I'd say Kamil Mocet (https://www.instagram.com/kamilmocet/?hl=en), but I would send him that second pic and definitely not the first of that phoenix as far as inspiration goes.

What would that style be called? The non colored 1 (the first picture)?

I would call more like a black and grey stippling even thought thats not the best term.

I also just realized that I left out someone in NYC who would be perfect for what you want!

Richard Smith:

Super nice guy and super chill. I have the left side of my chest done by him when Nate Kostechko inspired him to start doing some crazy stippling stuff.

Here are some examples of pieces similar to your desired style:

It looks very similar to something @truong87 or @davidhoangtattoo might do, so I'm tempted to say B&G Neo Trad Japanese. Those would be artists with a similar style at least.
