Here at Skin Deep sometimes we get accused of printing too much work from abroad and not enough from our own ‘home-grown’ artists. Although tattooing is a worldwide phenomenon, we thought it was time we highlighted tattoos and tattooists from our own shores. So this month you will find articles on ‘Pompey’, The Portsmouth convention has been going for many a year now and has proved that it can hold its own against some of the bigger conventions in Britain. There’s a report on Stoke bike and tattoo weekend which proved that bikes and tattoos still have a place side by side in alternative cultures and I took a trip to the Emerald Isle to the first tattoo convention to be held in the heart of Cork and had a superb time and saw some excellent ink as well.
As far as featured studios go, Skin Deep visited Medway Tattoo and Piercing Centre in Rochester to find out a bit about the very talented artists in residence there and then headed up to the East coast to visit Shane Somers at the Whitby Tattoo studio.
As well as the tattooists, we thought we’d bring you some profiles on some of the tattoo collectors as well. If you’ve been to a tattoo convention in the last few years, you can pretty much guarantee that you will have run into ‘Mr and Mrs Tattoo’ - Gordon and Shonagh. This very colourful pair are a regular sight at nearly all the tattoo conventions in this country. We also dipped a toe into the world of stage show acts and had a chat with Lucifire, who must rank amongst the world’s best alternative show performers and Dave from Tusk Studio who has been experimenting with piercing and body modification long before it became a fashionable thing to do.
Next month’s issue will be a whopper - Literally, as we have put together and bumper 100 page issue of Skin Deep to include massive coverage of the London Convention, which sounds like its going to be the convention that everyone will be talking about for a long time after. Not only that, but there will be all the usual features and coverage bringing you the best tattoo photographs and tattooed people from around the globe that you will find anywhere. Issue 127 - On sale 8th November.
