Default Arty Help... Canvas?

Hello! I've never used canvas before so I'm a bit confused as to what these wee plastic bits i found with it are for??? Any takers?

They slot in the back between the corners to strengthen the stretcher.

If you decide you like it, its best to make your own with better quality canvas and stronger frames.... that way you can experiment with different canvas weights and primers. You get a nicer finished object too, and better longevity.

Ahh see I thought they looked like they slotted there but they poke out and don't go in fully. Thanks BB!!

They were on sale so I decided to give it a go, we'll see how the results turn out.

Yup, they are not always made very well, so they don'y fit right. Unless its an uber huge canvas you don't need em anyway.

Good luck with it!

I used to use old wooden picture frames to stretch canvas on, as they are usually bevelled and quite strong - proper canvas stretcher goo is nasty stuff made from rabbit skin or fish, though, stinks to high heaven - I used PVA glue watered down with warm water instead.
But now I'm lazy and buy pre-made canvasses.

I'll get some help from tutors when I go back to college in September, they'll know what their doing with canvas. I was all inspired by Boberto's work and I've always loved using spray paints. They look pretty sweet on canvas, gonna do the main painting in acrylic when I get a day off. Got plenty of time to do it the fellas birthday is in July. Now I'm hoping i don't mess it all up, little bit rusty on the painting, should probably do a wee tester on some paper.

PVA is a good alternative to rabbit skin glue but you have to be sure to get the non yellowing kind.

Of course, PVA is made from petroleum products, so you can argue that its just as morally questionable to use that.
