Default Tattoo Artists Starting Age

Just been lookin at a few old threads around the forums here and thought of something. There's talk of not to get tattooed under age (Duh.) and the legalities of different aspects, and a "do as I say, not as I do" mentality, so I have to ask, what about the age to get yer foot in the door?

I'm not talking apprentice material; Sweaping shit, taking shit and serving shit in a lovely wee cup with two sugars. I mean actualy tattooing people, from a studio or from a messey bedroom with the Deftones playin loud as fuck.

I'm kindda unsure about what the law for this is in the Uk, and other countries, but I think it may also be 18?

The reason I also ask, is cause there's loads of "famous" tattoo artists around the world that's been doin it for decades, starting pre-18. I know that Chris Garver had his first bash at the age of 17. A friend of mine in New Zealand, Scott Combs (Pheonix Tattoos), started at 15 or 16 if I remember correctly.

A talented artist, that started at a young (and illegal?) age... Would you frown?

Thoughts?

I didn't think there was a minimum age to be a tattooist.

the law in england is simple, because the premisses is licensed you have to be 18 to even be on the premisses, just like a sex shop, bookies and pulling pints....

cos its not true.

you cannot be tattooed if your under 18. thats literally ALL the law says.

tattooing of minors act or somethin..

nothing to say a 16yr old apprentice cant tattoo, they just cant BE tattooed.

unless theres regional differences.

tattooing of minors act has got nothing to do with being a tattoo artist!...

in UK law it comes under...Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1982 (c. 30) part 8....like i say nothing to do with the tattooing of minors act...
scotland maybe different but i'm sure NI is the same pert

I'd say 18 makes sense for the same reason that under 18s can't serve alcohol.

I didn't start til I was 31 but then I was always a late bloomer
