Having asked my dermatologist friend some years ago (i have plenty of moles and freckles) he said

"Freckles are small, flat, pigmented spots on the skin that aren't present at birth. Instead, they develop in time as a result of sun exposure. Freckles occur primarily in sun-exposed areas of the body, such as the nose and shoulders. Freckles rarely develop into skin cancer. Moles tend to be darker and raised slightly, but not always", (i think he was quoting from a text book by the sound of it!) he then went on to tell me the danger of tattooing over them as i mentioned above.

So pretty much if its a light colour and flat to the skin, like my freckles, I'm happy to work over them. If they look my moles, dark and raised, then i won't.

I always talk this through with a client beforehand for health (and placement) implications, its also mentioned on our consent form.

Yup I have a full zipper down my back, coloured with B&G backpiece, no probs, got one right across my stomach too but its not faded enough yet. Like the others said wait till its white. ie fully healed. Colour tattoos cover better, as with grey shade the tone of the grey over the scars can differ slightly so you see the scar a little more through the ink if that bothers you. more an issue if you covering something like burns or stretch marks though which are covering a large area as it gives the shading more of a 'dappled' look.
