Skin Deep 146

The tattoo convention season has firmly got underway and so far we have seen some great shows be they large or small and some incredible ink. I am really impressed by the quality of work I have seen so far. It just goes to show that British tattooing can firmly hold its head up when it comes to top quality ink work. Saying that, I am constantly amazed at the shear ingenuity and craftsmanship of work that is being produced from all corners of the globe. You tattooists really are pushing the bar ever higher when it comes to tattoo art and I for one take my hat off to you.

And while I’m on the subject of conventions can I just remind all those planning on attending the State of the Art convention in Derby this year that Skin Deep has its own room again where we will have an art exhibition of tattoo inspired work.

Last year the work was stunning with Top tattoo artists like Jo Harrison, Leah Moule, Suzi Q and Gerry Carnelly to name but a few exhibiting some of their work. If you fancy bringing along a canvas/print or two, please feel free, we’d love to show it off for you. The very talented Pete Makee also had many of his fifties Teddy boy/girl inspired paintings on show, much to the crowds delight. (Pete even got a tattoo of a painting that he did of his wife over the weekend). It just goes to show that tattooists really are artists either in skin or on canvas.

We also will have an Art Fusion project for Tattoo artists to attend with canvases and charcoal for you to get stuck into. Just come and leave your mark on a blank canvas or add to an existing piece started by a previous tattooist. Please feel free to come and have a go, even if you are working at the show and only have five minutes to spare, we’d love to have you join in. and if you are visiting the show maybe spend a little longer and help to create some collaborative masterpieces.

This year we are proud to announce a new addition to the Skin Deep Room. The very talented airbrush artist; Beej Curtis. We have featured a custom motorcycle that Beej pained with tattoo inspired images from the great Horioshi III. If you are a fan of MTV you might just have seen some of his work in the shape of Justin Hawkins’ latest guitar, which was painted by the man himself. Beej will be demonstrating his prowess with an airbrush and showing off his pin striping skills over the weekend. The Skin Deep room is situated behind one of the many bars in the Assembly Rooms close to the live music area – look out of the signs.

We’d really love to see you all in the room over the weekend of the 21st-22nd of July, you can guarantee that this year’s show will surpass the previous ones with probably one of the best line-ups of international artists you could hope to find anywhere.

See you there!
