Behind Closed Doors 222 - Alan Aldred

This issue, we take a look at the very cool work of Alan Aldred who makes a home at the mighty Cosmic Tattoo over in Colchester. The dude is big and ugly enough to speak for himself, so over to you Sir…

“I’ve been painting for pretty much the same amount of time that I’ve been tattooing. I originally started painting real traditional flash, and as I’ve experimented more artistically with my paintings have found that it’s helped progress my tattooing in more ways than I could ever have imagined. It’s definitely helped me to understand how to use colour and what colours blend and complement each other.

“Most, if not all, of my paintings are watercolours or drawing inks. I tend to stick to relatively traditional subject matter but try to exaggerate the amount of colour and detail I put into the design. Generally I tend to paint whenever I can in between drawing up designs for customers, so sometimes it can be a bit of a squeeze to fit it in. I think it’s important to do for any artist though, as it shows customers and other tattooists what you’re actually capable of artistically – and you never know, you might get the chance to tattoo them which is always fun!”
